Iron and nitrogen doped hollow core mesoporous shell carbon spheres (Fe-N-C450/75) are prepared from solid core mesoporous shell silica hard template. The carbon spheres have a high surface area (1199 m2/g) and a large porosity (pore size: 8 nm; pore volume: 1.77 cm3/g). The carbon spheres exhibit an excellent ORR catalytic activity in sulfuric acid, including onset potential of 0.83 V (vs RHE), high disk limiting current density of 5.4 mA/cm2 at 900 rpm with a scan rate of 10 mV/s. These outstanding ORR performances are attributed to their well-developed core shell structures and well-defined porous properties of large pores and high surface area.
