Electrically conducting graphene sheets and insulating graphene oxide sheets have found potential applications as matrix in various components of an advanced Li-based batteries. Their performance can be enhanced by introducing defects and/or dopants. A 3-D network of electrically conducting reduced graphene oxide sheets can serve as effective host material to accommodate nanoparticles of high charge-storage-capacity materials such as Si for use as anode, and Li sulfide for use as cathode. It was found that the power capability of the anode material can be enhanced significantly by introducing in-plane holey defects to facilitate cross-plane Li ion diffusivity.  The insulating graphene oxide, on the other hand, is suitable for use as separator that separates the two electrodes. When suitably modified, graphene oxide-based separator can have the added benefits of reducing susceptibility of the battery to thermal runaway, enhancing safe operation of the battery.
