It has been previously shown that low-valent gallium dimers containing a gallium-gallium double bond (digallene) can activate a variety of small molecules including H2, azides, and some small olefins.1-3 Our investigation now turns to the more sterically-encumbered Ar2MMAr2 compounds (M = Al, Ga; Ar = substituted phenyl or terphenyl substituents). The synthesis and characterization of these compounds and subsequent reaction chemistry with olefins and other small molecules will be discussed.
