Margulis and coworkers have recently published a set of articles (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011  , 133, 20186 and J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2013  , 135, 17528) describing the nature of structure and early dynamics of excess electrons and holes in different room temperature ionic liquids. Results from the last article describe the transition from an experimentally ellusive 'dry electron' state into a 'trapped electron state' which is accompanied by important changes in the spectroscopy of these systems. Interestingly the localization of excess electrons on cations or anions very much depend on the nature of the ionic liquid and the relative alignment of electronic states in the condensed phase. In particular in the [Pyrr1,4][Tf2N] and [N1113][Tf2N] systems excess electrons appear to localize on anions and often result in the decomposition of the anion on which they finally localize.
