Abstract: UV photodetachment has been investigated in aliphatic ionic liquids using a series of carefully purified 1-methyl-1-alkyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([Py1n+] [Ntf2-], n=3,4,6,10) liquids. Following photodetachment at 200 nm, the full transient spectrum of the electron and hole are measured throughout the visible and near-IR with sub-picosecond time resolution. Geminant recombination is examined, and electron scavengers are employed to help deconvolve the spectra of the electrons and the associate holes. Spectral evolution associated with localization and cooling of the electron is followed with sub-picosecond time resolution. The ultrafast time dependence of the electron's reactivity, correlated with the localization and cooling, are compared across the series. The results will be discuss in the context of recent computational predictions and time resolved radiolysis experiments.
