A microbial consortium SW-1 consisting of bacteria and fungi was isolated from pulp and paper mill effluent sludge to enhance the biodegradation of lignin. Experiments were performed in shake flask cultivation and response surface methodology (RSM) was used to examine effects of temperature, shaking speed, dosage of inoculation on lignin biodegradation over 24 h using SW-1. A quadratic model was found to fit the lignin reduction condition. The maximal reduction of lignin (58.4%) at initial 800mg/L concentration was observed in verified experiment, which was comparable with model predicted (57.5%).Additional carbon sources such as glucose could enhance the biodegradation rate and metabolite was also measured by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and results demonstrated that oxidative Ca-C� and ether cleavages for the mechanism of lignin degradation.
