Varied sized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle core (MNP) was synthesized from hydrothermal synthesis, whose structure was confirmed by XRD and particle size was confirmed by TEM. The Fe3O4 MNP was further coated by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to form APTES-Fe3O4, which were confirmed by FTIR. Fe3O4 Magnetic Initiator (MI) was further prepared by anchoring the AZO initiator to the surface of APTES-Fe3O4. The success formation was confirmed by FTIR and the grafting density was calculated by TGA and DSC. Free radical can be induced by the vibration of magnetic initiators under alternating current magnetic field (AC MF). The idea behind is that the magnetic portion of the molecule will experience a force impose on it by the MF that will be transferred through the attached molecule to the weak link. Once the weak link is sufficiently stretched due to transmittance of energy from the vibrating magnetic core, cleavage of the bond will take place and a radical will be formed that can initiate free radical polymerization. Theoretical correlation between the force induced by the vibration of magnetic core under AC MF and the particles size as well as the magnetic field was calculated. The relationship is given by an equation, which is shown in figure1.
