Gamma-alumina particles with poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) as a binder were coated on flexible support to produce porous transparent layers that absorb silicone oil.  The gamma-alumina was prepared by heating pseudo-boehmite at 500 �C for several hours.  The boehmite particles had been previously prepared by a two step process of hydrolysis and condensation of aluminum alkoxides.  The reaction conditions to make the boehmite were adjusted to control the particle size and shape.  These parameters were critical in determining the final transparency and pore volume of the gamma-alumina/PVB coatings.  PDMS on the surface of the coating is drawn into the interior leaving the coefficient of friction unchanged by contact with the oil.  These layers were electrically insulating which allowed the application of surface charge that was long lasting and they remained insulating even as they absorbed oil.
