Surface-confined thin films of conjugated polymers with precisely defined molecular structure and possessing mechanical robustness and chemical stability, durability, distinctive photophysical and electrochemical properties can deliver breadth of potential applications in next generation semiconducting devices.  However, preparation of such films still remains a challenge. In this presentation, we will report on conjugated polymer thin film architectures prepared via stepwise Sonogashira polymerization. This method yields surface-immobilized thin films consisting of polymer brushes with precisely defined molecular structures (including alternating donor-acceptor structures or structures with internal field gradient) and possessing unidirectional chain alignment and high packing density.  In addition to simplicity of preparation and broad variety of compatible building blocks, this method requires extremely low starting materials loading, low material consumption and requires no purification of the final polymer. The preparation of thin films consisting of surface-confined conjugated polymer brushes and their morphology, structural characteristics, as well as photophysical and electrochemical properties will be discussed in this presentation.
