Nanoporous polymers have potential applications as catalyst substrates, gas sorption matrices, and chromatography separation materials. One major group of nanoporous polymers, hypercrosslinked polymers, is typically synthesized via the suspension polymerization of divinylbenzene and vinylbenzyl chloride, followed by the formation of hypercrosslinks, e.g. via Lewis acid--catalyzed Friedel--Craft alkylation. We are pursuing several routes to prepare new nanoporous hypercrosslinked polymers. We are studying the effects of enhancing the rigidity of the backbone of the hypercrosslinked particles by inserting sterically crowded stilbene/N-substituted maleimide comonomers. (Scheme 1) We are also hypercrosslinking maleic anhydride containing precursor polymers to obtain functional nanoporous structures. (Scheme 2) The Tg as an evaluation of the segment mobility of the polymer backbone was measured by thermal analysis before hypercrosslinking. The BET surface area and BJH pore size distribution of the hypercrosslinked polymers are characterized from N2 isotherms. We are investigating correlations between surface area and polymer backbone rigidity.Scheme 1Scheme 2
