The oxygen evolving cluster of photosystem II is a tetranuclear manganese cluster with a single calcium ion. The catalyst releases O2 via a formal four-electron reductive elimination of O2. A tetranuclear manganese(V/VI)-lithium tert-butylimido cubane cluster will be presented, which upon removal of the lithium ion becomes unstabilized and undergoes a four-electron reductive elimination of azo-tert-butane, the nitrene analogue of O2. Characterization of the reaction products and mechanistic implications will be presented.
