YOUNGO is one of nine civil society constituency groups recognized within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This group is tasked with the organization of youth non-governmental organizations attending the Convention meetings as well as creating public awareness about the treaty negotiations and advocating for specific policy changes. YOUNGO focuses its efforts on promoting social improvements that ultimately have broader implications related to climate change. Such improvements may work to give a voice to underrepresented communities, encourage an interest in climate research, or develop health and mitigation plans for populations adversely affected by climate change. Highlighting these concerns through speeches and actions, YOUNGO works to ensure that specific issues are addressed in the Convention meetings and texts. Furthermore, this group hopes to elucidate the climate negotiation and policy-making process so that all interested parties have the ability to get involved with this international affair. The extensive use of social media networks allows for the connection of the Convention with people around the world, both at the meetings and throughout the rest of the year. In addition to YOUNGO's role as an advocate during the policy-making process, this constituency also offers a valuable chance for its own members not only to take part in these international meetings, but also to further their own scientific, ethical, economic, and political understanding of climate change. This opportunity is crucial for creating stewards of climate advocacy beyond the scope of UNFCCC in communities across the globe.
