Since the establishment of the Committee on Professional Training more than 75 years ago, the ACS through an Approval Program has set Guidelines for both approved programs and certified chemistry majors.  The program started as a response to concern that chemistry majors were not all obtaining the necessary training for the available positions during the 1930's.  Since then, the requirements have evolved to meet the changing needs of our students and their employers as well as the evolution of the field of chemistry and how it is taught.  In this talk we will discuss the evolution of the Guidelines and what we see them looking like moving forward as we finalize the 2014 version.  We will also describe what we have learned through recent surveys that probed a variety of aspects of post-secondary education.
