A new series of square-planar of nickel(II) donor/acceptor dyes based on ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LL'CT) transitions have been prepared. The redox active amidophenolate (donor) and diiimine (acceptor) ligands [amidophenolate = (E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino)cyclohexa-2,4-diol (ap) and (E)-10-((2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino)phenanthren-9,10 diol (appdiol), diimine = bipyridine (bpy), 4,4-di-tertbutyl-bipyridine (tBu2-bpy), 1,10 phenanthroline (phen)] have been prepared and characterized by structural, electrochemical, and spectroscopic methods. UV-vis-NIR spectra of these complexes show intense and tunable charge-transfer absorbances with maxima ranging from 800 to 1000 nm. Electrochemical studies show sequential, ligand-localized, one-electron oxidations and one-electron reductions for all members of the series.
