FeS2 is a promising solar-energy conversion material because of its optical properties and abundance of its constituent elements. It absorbs light strongly, has a bandgap (~ 0.95 eV) suitable for photovoltaic applications, and has demonstrated potential as a solar-to-electrical energy-conversion material. Arguably the most convincing demonstration of the energy-conversion potential of FeS2was done using it as a photoanode in contact with an aqueous electrolyte containing iodine and iodide.The photoelectrochemical performance of FeS2 in contact with a nonaqueous electrolyte has been investigated and relevant figures of merit (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor) have been compared to the aqueous system. Furthermore, the influence of mass-transfer on the figures of merit has been investigated and is understood by comparison to calculated current-voltage curves.
