Metal ions within transition-metal clusters, such as those present in the active sites of metalloproteins, react cooperatively to carry out challenging redox reactions. Given the parallel reactivity reported for both mononuclear main-group and transition-metal complexes, one can envision similar synergistic effects arising from the controlled and designed assembly of polynuclear main-group clusters. To that end, we employed a macrobicyclic ligand to template the electronic and structural parameters of trinuclear complexes of divalent Group 14 centers. Each main-group cation is held within a diketiminate chelate and line the internal cavity of the macrobicycle. The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of these complexes will be discussed.
