Small molecule organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are currently the subject of intense research efforts due to their promise in full-color large display applications. However it is extremely difficult to produce highly efficient blue-light emitters with a long device lifetime because of large energy barriers between transport layers and wide band gap blue emitters.Herein, we will present synthesis of a new dual core chromophore material, 1-[1,1';3',1'']terphenyl-5'-yl-6-(10-[1,1';3',1'']terphenyl-5'-yl-anthracen-9-yl)-pyrene (TP-AP-TP), which exhibits an ELmax value of 456 nm and a high luminance efficiency of 5.63 cd/A in an EL device. The device based on TP-AP-TP showed twice the lifetime of a device based on the commercialized material, 2-methyl-9,10-bis(naphthalen-2-yl)anthracene (MADN). The reason behind such high performance efficiency and lifetime is likely due to a 90O dihedral angle between the two core chromophores, which inhibits the excimer formation.The dual core chromophore materials developed in this work should enable the development of emitting materials with high quantum efficiencies in diverse new chromophore systems. Detailed analysis of structure-property relationships between chromophore structure and their optical and electronic properties will also be discussed.
