Gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxyterephathalic acid) has been shown to exhibit anti-oxidant properties. We report here preparation of bioactive small dendrimer-like polyamides with defined galloyl periphery, starting from commercially available polyamines (Fig. 1). We have taken advantage of differences in reactivity of primary and secondary amines and selectively acylated primary positions of polyamines at high yields. We have also used various activating groups to tune the reactivity of the gallic acid derivatives towards selective acylation of amines. Adipic and terephthalic acids were used as linkers to prepare second generation dendrimers (Fig. 2).
