The dramatic miniaturization of nature's enzymes into artificial catalytic peptides is a significant achievement in modern synthetic chemistry and biology. Structural preorganization in the transition states, critical for imbuing reactivity and selectivity, are poorly understood for peptide catalyses due to the size, conformational flexibility, and weakness of the interactions responsible for preorganization and transition state stabilization. The Cheong group at Oregon State applies and develops state-of-the-art computational tools to discover and explain fundamental and practical principles that underlie organic synthesis and material science. In this seminar, the latest discoveries and hypotheses in the factors that govern the reactivities and selectivities of peptide-catalyzed acylation reactions will be disclosed.
