Conjugated molecules have attracted a lot of attentions in organic electronics and optoelectronics because of their fast carrier mobility and Ion/Ioff ratio. Acenes are important conjugated molecules because of their high hole-mobilities. The carrier mobility of acenes can be increased by linearly extending the number of fused ring. However, poor solubility of the higher acenes in common organic solvents as well as low environmental stability in air is still challenges to material scientists. The oligomerization of a small semiconductor molecule could also be an effective way to expand a p system. In the work, a series of methoxy-substituted anthracene monomers, dimmers and trimers were synthesized. Photophysical properties, thermal stabilities and electrochemical behaviors were performed to assess their OTFT application potential. The anthracene-based oligomers were found to be promising for high charge mobility and stable organic semiconductors. Their solution solubility and HOMO energy level of the oligoanthracenes were enhanced by introducing methoxy groups on 1, 4 positions.
