Charge transfer kinetics at the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) electrode/electron donating material interface is one of the limiting factors for the overall efficiency of organic photovoltaics. Understanding the structural parameters that influence charge transfer dynamics between the bottom contact and the first monolayer of the active layer is crucial for the further optimization of organic photovoltaics. Submonolayer coverage of asymmetric zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) were formed on ITO to model the first layer of active material in organic photovoltaics.  Linking groups between the ZnPc and the phosphonic acid anchoring group were used to systematically control the distance and orientation between the ZnPc and the ITO electrode.  Waveguide spectroelectrochemistry (polarized potential-modulated attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy) was used to measure the heterogeneous charge transfer rate constants of the monomeric and aggregate populations of ZnPc as a function of the linker.  This study will lead to increased understanding of the structural and electronic parameters of organic molecules proximal to an oxide interface necessary for achieving efficient charge collection from the active layer.
