While one strives for high chemical reactivity in metal-catalyzed transformations, there is also a requirement often for selectivity (e.g., regio-, stereo-, chemo-, etc.) that often is best when reactions are slowed down. The ability to selectively couple just one aryl ring to a primary amine is a challenge in Pd-catalyzed amination chemistry and over arylation often occurs lowering yield and making purification more challenging. In this seminar we will discuss our rational approach to developing Pd-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) based catalysts for this purpose that possess good turn-over numbers (TON) while selectively producing secondary amine products of high interest in drug discovery.
