Throughout human history, plants and organisms have been used in medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring compounds that have been isolated from various plants often used for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation in traditional Chinese medicine.  The relationship between inflammation and cancer has recently led to the hypothesis that treatments for certain forms of cancer would benefit from targeting both the tumor and the inflammation associated with it. Inflammation in the tumor microenvironment has many tumor promoting effects by releasing signals that encourage the propagation of malignant cells. These types of cancers occur in organs that are susceptible to chronic inflammation such as the lungs, bladder, esophagus, pancreas and the gastrointestinal tract. The biological activity along with the sheer complexity of the structures renders many of these alkaloids notable as targets for synthesis. We report novel methods to synthetically access a subclass of these natural products relying on the rapid construction of quartnery all carbon stereocenters.
