We describe an efficient multicomponent reactionfor the preparation of �-unsaturated a-amino esters by ytterbium triflate catalyzed reaction of potassium organotrifluoroborate salts, aniline and ethyl glyoxalate. The synthetic viability of this protocol was demonstrated by moderate to high yields, short reaction time, and efficiency with respect to substrate scope. This approach is particularly important because it minimizes production of wastes, is rapid, and utilizes simplified workup procedures allowing the construction of diverse chemical libraries of drug-like molecules. Features of this strategy include mild conditions, convenient one-pot operation, and the possibility of reusing the catalyst.
