Motivated to identify and study sodium-based cell signaling processes in living systems, we have developed new fluorescent sodium sensors that exhibit high levels of selectivity and biocompatibility, particularly in the presence of the major cellular competitor potassium. This talk will detail our modular synthetic approach that allows for the rapid construction of unique classes of fluorescent sodium indicators as well as the in vitro and in cellulo results which establish the utility of these new sensors for visualizing sodium dynamics.
