In response to falling farm prices following the mechanization of agriculture in the 1920's and the great depression, scientists and leaders of industry proposed creating new markets for farmers through the development of industrial processes utilizing renewable agricultural starting materials to produce fuels and other industrial products.  This movement was named �chemurgy� by William J. Hale in his 1934 book �The Farm Chemurgic.�  Other leaders of the movement included Wheeler McMillen, George Washington Carver, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison.
