The Department of Physical Sciences at Cameron University hosted two summer science academies during the summer of 2014. One known as, “<b>NanoExplorers: A High School Summer Science Academy,</b>” was a ten day residential academy where students lived at Cameron for the two week period. There were 24 high school students from Oklahoma who participated in the program. The academy introduced students to those concepts necessary to understand why very small systems exhibit unique behavior. Activities were divided evenly between chemistry and physics activities and concepts. The other known “<b>Applied Mathematics and Aerospace Engineering for Middle School Girls</b>” was a 5 day residential academy which featured participation by 12 middle school girls from Oklahoma. This academy included an introduction to the principles of aerospace engineering and the mathematic which is required to understand these principles. Both academies featured activities designed to attract the students to careers in science, mathematics and engineering. Activities included in both academies will be reviewed. Dr. Ann Nalley writes the proposals and secures funding for both academies. She also serves as the director of the academies and plans and oversees all activities. Many young women have been inspired to seek degrees in science and engineering through these academies. This presentation will review the history of these academies and the role Dr. Nalley has played in their success.
