Au catalysts have been found to be selective catalysts for a number of oxidation reactions.  We have found that Au/SiO<sub>2</sub> can be made to oxidize propane to acetone with a high selectivity in a gas phase reaction in the presence of a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen after modification by decoration with small clusters of titanium oxide or Ti-Si oxide. On the other hand, in the liquid phase, Au catalysts can be made selective for epoxidation using common oxidants. The apparently different active phases for these two reactions will be discussed.  <br/>
