Due to the growing demand for aromatics, more options available with high yield of aromatics are required. Methanol to aromatic hydrocarbons (MTA) conversion, a reaction that value-added chemicals can be gained from alternative feedstocks, has been investigated and ZSM-5 zeolite is utilized to achieve high BTX selectivity in the process. In this paper, by impregnating the zinc to the P modified ZSM-5 zeolite, a series of Zn/P-ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared and its catalytic performance of MTA conversion was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor. XRD, Py-IR, NH3-TPD and NMR were used to characterize the ZSM-5 catalysts modified with non-metal and metal species. This study showed that, the impregnation of the zinc played the key role in both zeolitic acidity and catalytic performance. The introduction of zinc did not affect the amount of total acid sites significantly, whereas influenced the distribution of strong and weak acid sites obviously. As while as the load weight of the impregnated zinc increased, the amount of strong acid sites decreased quickly and the number of the weak ones became more and more until occupied the whole battlefield, and the B/L (Brönsted acid to Lewis acid) ratio descended continuously either. The catalyst activity and selectivity of BTX appeared to have a decline trend after an initial ascent, and the initial conversion of methanol surpassed 99% and BTX yield and selectivity of more than 54% and 83% was achieved.
