Microalgae are fast growing photosynthetic microorganisms that can produce oil which can be converted to biofuel. Nitrogen deprivation as an environmental stress can induce the algae’s lipid productivity toward fatty acid biosynthesis. In this project, we are reporting the potential of Neochloris Minuta (UTEX 776) algae for lipid production. The lipid content for N. Minuta was increased from 12% to 33% under nitrogen deprivation. The lipid composition showed that the majority of produced fatty acids were saturated and ideal for biodiesel production. Triacylglycerides were derivatized to fatty acid methyl esters prior to their identification and quantification by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS).
