Interfacial interaction and compatibility between the ceramic dielectric and polymer matrix have strong impact on the dielectric constant and energy density of their composites. In this work, Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 nanofibers (BST60 NF) with a large aspect ratio prepared via electrospinning were used as dielectric fillers in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. To improve its compatibility with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix polymer, surface modification of dielectric fillers was obtained through functionalization of the BST NF by hydroxylation using H2O2 treatment and subsequent fluorination. With 4.4 vol. % of surface-fluorinated BST NF(F-BST NF), the extractable energy density of the F-BST NF/PVDF composites is more than doubled as compared with pure PVDF matrix. Such significant enhancement is attributed to the combined effect of both surface fluorination and large aspect ratio of the BST nanofibers. This work may provide a route for using the surface-fluorinated ceramic nanofibers to enhance electric energy density in ceramic−polymer nanocomposites.
