Occurrence of taste and odor compounds, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), has been considered as a major concern due to their unpleasant earthy-musty odors in aquatic environment. Adsorption by mesoporous nanomaterial was known as an alternative to remove hazardous organic contaminants because of their large surface area and hydrophobicity. Easy regeneration and reusability make them more attractive as adsorbents. Unfortunately, their potential toxicity and difficulties in handling restrict their applications in real filed. In this study, we proposed a facile way to fabricate granular-type mesoporous carbon (GMC), MC was initially synthesized, followed by adhesion on polyethersulfone (PES) droplet. The resultant MC and GMC were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. TEM confirmed that MC had an ordered mesoporous structure. A spherical shape of GMC with a 2.8 mm in diameter was observed by SEM. Adsorptive performances of geosmin and 2-MIB were investigated based on adsorption kinetic, isotherm, and effect of temperature. Comparing with commercial activated carbon (AC), synthesized GMC exhibited as twice adsorption capacity as AC’s one. The results were best fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model. Our research demonstrated the potential application of synthesized GMC in removal of taste and odor compounds.
