The reactivity of water and hydroxyls on oxide surfaces is widely involved in important catalytic reactions including PROX, WGS, hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions and photocatalytic splitting of water, thus the relevant fundamental understanding is of great importance. In this talk I will report our recent progress on the reactivity of water and hydroxyls on oxide surfaces employing the model catalysts approach. Two issues will be addressed. One issue is the influence of oxygen vacancy of oxide surfaces on the reactivity of water and hydroxyls. The reactivity of hydroxyls on oxide surfaces is controlled by the oxygen vacancy concentration. On the stoichiometric surface hydroxyls preferentially react to produce water; with the increase of oxygen vacancy concentration, the water formation reaction gets gradually supressed and other reaction pathways become opened, including the H<sub>2</sub> formation and the CO<sub>2</sub> formation by CO and surface hydroxyls. The other issue is the reactivity of water and hydroxyls on the metal-oxide interfacial structures. Water facilely dissociates on the metal-oxide interfaces but the reaction between formed hydroxyls and CO on metal surfaces depends on the composition and structure of metal-oxide interface.
