The folded structures of G-rich sequences in DNA and RNA are dependent on both the identity of the metal ion (K, Na, Li, Mg or Ca) as well as the presence of oxidized base lesions in the sequence.  The ability of G-quadruplex-forming sequences to change shape based on the presence of various mono- and divalent metal ions as well as the role of oxidized guanine sites will be discussed in the context of both the human telomeric sequence and various promoter sequences.
