Over the years, our consideration of the structures of secondary metabolites (aka natural products) has stimulated new developments and discoveries on a number of fronts. I will present selected examples that have led to: a) new strategies for synthesis b) new methods for structure determination c) unexpected, serendipitous developments d) insights to the biosynthetic origin of some natural products I will describe recent studies where we have generated and tested a hypothesis that a non-enzyme-mediated (i.e., spontaneous) step is operative in the actual biosynthetic pathway leading to a natural product having a "one-off" structural feature.
