The recent resurgence of interest in redox-active ligand (RAL) complexes stems in part from the possibility of discovering and developing new stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. A major motivation for exploring this paradigm is to enable multi-electron chemistry at earth-abundant metals which might ultimately lead to replacements for existing precious metal catalysts. Far less commonly explored are RAL complexes of these heavier/more expensive metals.<br/>Our group, and others, have been investigating the coordination chemistry of verdazyl radicals <b>1</b> for some time. Recently we unearthed the rich and robust redox activity of verdazyls when bound to metals. We are presently studying the synthesis and reactivity of verdazyl complexes of pallladium, with the long term goal of developing new kinds of reaction chemistry based on the interplay between Pd and a RAL (specifically a verdazyl). In this presentation I will present recent explorations of Pd/verdazyl complexes, specifically their synthesis, characterization, and fundamental redox chemistry.
