We have synthesized a variety of tricarbonyl manganese(I) and rhenium(I) diphosphine perrhenato complexes of the type, fac-(CO)3(P2)MOReO3 from the reactions of the corresponding hydrido complexes, fac-(CO)3(P2)MH with perrhenic acid, where, P2 = chelated diphosphines and M = Mn or Re. Recently we solved the crystal structure of fac-(CO)3(P2)MnOReO3, where P2 = 1,4-Bis(diphenylphosphino)butane. We have observed that the rhenium analogues are highly cytotoxic against U-937 blood cancer cell lines. For example, the IC50 value of fac-(CO)3(P2)ReOReO3, where, P2 = 1,3-Bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, is less than 1 µM. Additionally, we have determined from electronic spectroscopy that the above rhenium perrhenato complex binds to DNA in an intercalative mode. We would like to present our results on the cytotoxic behavior and DNA binding properties of both manganese and rhenium (diphosphine) perrhenato complexes.
