Unique attributes of flow chemistry have been applied to the preparation of a variety of chemical structures. A high backpressure reactor has been developed to facilitate high temperature transformations using silicon carbide reaction tubes that couple very effectively with microwave irradiation to take the temperature well above the boiling points of the reactants and solvents. Normally worrisome highly reactive azides and diazonium salts have been routinely prepared and reacted in one continuous operation to generate functionalized, highly useful building blocks in a safe manner. Additionally, in-process reaction monitoring with GCMS, LCMS, and NMR spectroscopy has been developed to allow for continuous reaction optimization. This required the development of new software to automate hands-free reaction optimization. Finally, in-line continuous extraction technology and monitoring will also be discussed.
