Co catalysts supported on nano-ceria was studied in terms of their reduction and oxidation behavior under hydrogen, oxygen and water atmospheres as well as during ethanol steam reforming.  The effect of particle size on the reducibility of ceria was investigated with and without a metal. The reducibility of the support was found to be a strong function of the particle size, with smaller particles showing a higher affinity for reduction.  In steady-state reaction experiments, ceria samples showed significant ethanol dehydration and steam reforming activity, with the more reduced samples exhibiting higher performance. No significant ethylene reforming was observed with either sample.  The presence of a metal (e.g., Co) was found to affect the reduction and reoxidation characteristics of ceria significantly.  Results from catalytic performance studies as well as characterization experiments using DRIFTS, XANES, EXAFS, TEM, XRD and temperature-programmed techniques will be discussed.<br/>
