This presentation will cover the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic testing of different ternary metal oxide catalysts, highlighting the necessity of sub-monolayer and monolayer coverage. Monolayer oxide-on-oxide catalysts are ideal systems to investigate the molecular/electronic and structure–activity/selectivity relationships for various catalytic applications.1 Such metal oxide catalysts can be prepared by a multitude of synthesis methods, all resulted in similar surface metal oxide species.2 The investigated MOx species range from metal oxide monomers and oligomers (two-dimension) at sub-monolayer coverage, to three-dimensional MOx nanoparticles above monolayer coverage.3 However, the concentration of such surface species - monolayer being the concentration limit of 2D MOx species - is significantly affected by the precise preparation. Our work is aimed to mix different metal oxides, known as ternary metal oxide catalysts, in order to tune both the (Brønsted and Lewis) acidic and redox properties of the prepared supported (M1Ox)m-(M2Oy)n/(M3Oz)bulk metal oxide catalyst (preferentially at sub-monolayer and monolayer coverage). We have already observed positive synergetic effects over (VOx)m-(TiOy)n/SiO2 catalysts obtaining significantly higher, up to 6 times, propylene productivity (about 12 kgpropylene/kgcatalyst/hour)4 via the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODH). At the same time, we are using the propane ODH reaction as a complementary technique (together to Raman and UV-vis spectroscopy) to evidence dispersed MOx surface species at sub-monolayer and monolayer coverage since marginal changes in the propane consumption TOF are expected.5 References 1.
