This presentation will focus on the synthesis and absorption/transport properties of robust porous organic polymers (POPs) with tunable porosities and functional groups. These copolymers can be synthesized in excellent yields using a broad range of synthetic strategies, ranging from amine-aldehyde and amine-acid anhydride condensations to copper-catalyzed click chemistry and cobalt-catalyzed acetylene trimerization (CCAT). Functionalized POPs can be made either de novo from monomers or by post-synthesis modification of struts. The resulting materials have many of the desirable features of zeolites, such as high surface areas and porosities, and can be similarly effective in the absorption of small molecules. However, given the enormous diversity of potential structures and chemical functional groups that can be incorporated into their pores, these POPs have the potential to extend absorption far beyond the realm of zeolitic chemistry to include behaviors such as protection against air-borne toxic chemicals, separation, and tunable hydrophobicity.
