Perovskite type materials LaNiO3-δ (LNO) was found to degrade Methyl Orange (MO) dye in aqueous solution at room temperature without additional chemicals or light. The concentration of MO was decreased from 100% to around 10% after 6h. Degradation mechanism was raveled by characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, UV-Vis, HPLC and ESI. MO was approved to have two intermediates, N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) and Sulfanilic acid, during degradation. Degradation under such mild condition, MO was treated by two synergic effects. Nickel (+2, +3) is reduced during MO degradation; Carbonate formed on LNO surface could speed up azo bond cleavage compared with much slower MO degradation under N2 condition. Bulk and surface property of perovskite, like mixed valence state, is its advantage for dye degradation and/or organic substrate reaction. Some organic reaction with LNO is under progress.
