Characterization methods to identify and discriminate polymer materials based on their mechanical properties with atomic force microscopy is a focus of much research activity.  The ability to quantitatively measure on the nanoscale viscoelastic properties of increasingly complex polymer systems such as composites and blends remains a significant challenge.   Recent progress is discussed in the ability to quantitatively measure the storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss tangent of polyolefin containing systems with both piezo and magnetically actuated contact resonance and amplitude modulation based methods.  These methods have been successfully applied  to a blend of thermoplastics and elastomers.  The loss tangent has also been measured as a function of temperature, revealing important polymer transitions.
