Semiconductors form the backbone of modern electronics, as they are the basis of transistors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar cells. In order to improve the quality and efficiency of these electronics, new materials must be found. Hybrid halide perovskites, inorganic compounds with the formula AMX3 (where A is an organic cation, M is a metal cation, and X is a halide anion), are commonly used as semiconducting materials due to their wide range of optical and electronic properties. Doping between I-, Br-, and Cl- tunes the optical and electronic properties of these hybrid materials, allowing for greater versatility compared to more traditional inorganic structures. CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx and CH3NH3PbBr3-xClx were synthesized using traditional solid state methods, and their crystal structures were analyzed via X-ray diffraction. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used to analyze the optical properties (band gap, etc.) of these compounds. Replacing the X site with a smaller, more electronegative anion increases the band gap significantly, along with decreasing the lattice parameters of the compounds.
