In order to extend the extraordinary intrinsic thermal, electrical, mechanical, optical or/and magnetic properties of graphene to the third dimension, we discuss the development of stimuli responsive self-folding approaches using graphene-polymer bilayers. Importantly, since the bilayers can be patterned using photolithography and etching, we show how a wide range of 3D optical and electrochemical sensors can be fabricated in curved and folded geometries. We describe the application of these sensors to detection of organic molecules and photodetection with enhanced sensitivity as compared to two dimensional graphene geometries. In addition, we highlight programmable stimuli responsive and reversible self-rolling of these bilayers of importance in soft-robotics.
