1,1-Diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7) is an insensitive energetic material that has captured the interest among academic and industrial chemists due to its interesting chemical properties. As a potential replacement for some currently used explosives suffering from sensitivity, the insensitive and high thermal stability of FOX-7 makes it an appealing alternative. Attempts to improve the properties of FOX-7 have been explored by several groups worldwide. In our recent contribution to these efforts, the synthesis of the first cations based on FOX-7 and its hydrazine derivative, 1-amino-1-hydrazino-2,2-dinitroethene (HFOX) have been successfully isolated and characterized via single crystal X-ray analysis. These cations represent highly desirable precursors for energetic salts due to their oxygen rich content. The FOX-7 based salts were obtained by reacting FOX-7 with a variety of strong acids such as triflic, perchloric, and hydrochloric acids with moderate to high yields. The physical and energetic properties were examined and found to exceed that of TNT and comparable to that of FOX-7 and RDX (cyclo-1,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine), demonstrating the potential application of FOX-7 and HFOX cations as precursors for energetic salts.
