Photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production from water has been considered to be one of the most promising solar-to-hydrogen conversion technologies. In the last decade, various functionalized nanostructures were designed to address the primary requirements for an efficient photocatalytic or photoelectrochemical generation of hydrogen by using solar energy: visible-light activity, chemical stability, appropriate band edge characteristics, and potential for low-cost fabrication. Among the various approaches, nanostructure design, especially one-dimensional nanostructure, with well tailored band alignment provides a powerful means to the improvement of the photocatalytic activity. In this presentation, we have paid special attention on the nanoscale control of the material morphology and construction of functionalized nanostructures to promote charge separation and prolong the lifetime of the photoexcited charge carriers, as well as surface design for accelerated surface reaction. Our discussion is principally organized around the topic of one dimensional nanostructures designed for efficient solar water splitting, including 1) one-dimensional metal oxide nanorods for photoelectrochemical water splitting, 2) one-dimensional CdZnS nanotwins for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
