Graphite, the most common allotropic form of carbon, is well-known for its chemical inactivity. We have found, that the conditions of possible chemical modification reactions at the surface of bulk graphite can be foreseen using the details of similar chemical modifications of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown large area graphene. This finding was successfully used for the modification of graphite by aryl rings and carbonyl ylides [1,2]. The parallelism in behavior of chemical reactions at the surface of CVD graphene and graphite can provide useful hints for creation of new organic modifications of graphite.
