Borates comprise an industrially important class of compounds with many current and emerging uses in energy generation, storage and conservation, as well as in agriculture and the manufacture of glasses, ceramics and sustainable building materials. These compounds contain tri- and tetra-coordinated BO<sub>3</sub> and BO<sub>4</sub> units that may link via corner sharing to form rings, cages, chains, sheets and networks that arrange themselves in a variety of ways giving them a rich structural chemistry. The diversity of possible structures and compositions of borates imparts a wide range of useful properties relevant to a multitude of applications. A few examples of synthetic approaches used to produce borates will be presented in this paper along with characterization methods. Examples will include zinc, nickel, cobalt, and manganese borates. These materials can be synthesized under mild aqueous or hydrothermal conditions and characterized by chemical analysis, powder XRD and thermal analysis. Structure-property correlations of these materials will be discussed.
