As the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has steadily increased over the last few decades, so has the interest in finding a way to convert it into a useable energy source. Specifically, the catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to liquid fuel is a rapidly growing research area. In an effort toward production of solar fuels a novel series of catalysts for CO2 reduction were synthesized and characterized. Catalysts of the type [M(dpk2)]n (n = 0, +1, +2,+3; M = Cu, Co, Ni, Mn) were studied for their interactions both CO2 and water. A proposed mechanism for these interactions was modeled and products of the reaction are investigated by GC-MS to determine their usefulness as fuel precursors.
